Florida Fire Marshals and Inspectors Association Presents

A Day of Learning - 3 Classes (6 CEUs)
Lithium-Ion and EV Charging Issues

Lithium Ion Battery Issues - 3 hours (9am - 12pm)

Part 1:

How to Prevent Thermal Runaway in Lithium-Ion Batteries Recent lithium-ion battery explosions have demonstrated how dangerous they can be. This webinar will explain the four stages of battery failure and how to prevent a thermal runaway with proper “Advanced Detection” at the appropriate stage of failure. It will also address why conventional gas detection will not prevent thermal runaway and address best design and layout practices as well as sequence of operation.

Part 2:

Lithium-Ion Battery Manufacturing Safety Assessment This presentation will illustrate the stages of lithium-ion battery manufacturing, addressing safety risks inherent at each phase and proposing preventative solutions. It will encompass the relevant codes and standards mandated for every stage of production, as well as the diverse approaches taken by AHJs to mitigate fire threats and ensure people's safety within their jurisdictions.

Addressing Current Challenges in Florida - 1 hour (12pm to 1 pm LUNCH PROVIDED) The lunchtime discussion will focus on several emerging challenges, including: State of Florida requirements relating to narcotics control. Safety, securely and quickly shutting off power. Increasing compliance of Knox Box ordinances.

Are you Prepared for the Growth of EV Charging Stations - 2 hours (1pm to 3pm) The growth of electric vehicles (EVs) on the road has accelerated the development of an EV infrastructure to charge those vehicles. Like EVs, EV charging stations pose numerous challenges to the fire services. This panel will examine various topics, including: Best practices in where charging stations should be placed, How to safely and securely shut off power to the EV charging station, A code consultant will review existing and pending codes that impact EV charging stations, How fires at charging stations are different than your typical car fire, Hear how others are handling the challenge of EV car fires, Hear from the State on why this is specifically important to the state of Florida and the current status of the EV charging station infrastructure, Hear from other Fire Marshals in the state on how their jurisdictions are addressing this issue, Ask one manufacturer what their recommendations are, and an interactive session to ask and answer questions facing the state of FL and all fire jurisdictions with the challenge
