Description: 

Origin and Cause class:

This class will discuss various types of construction and how these types of
construction react when attacked by fire. This information assists fire investigators in determining fire spread throughout the structure.

Various definitions and common fire causes will be reviewed. Examining fuel loads and how the location of the fire inside a room can affect fire growth and physical patterns.

Information gathering from firefighters and witnesses along with scene examination and fire behavior will be reviewed. Fire pattern recognition and the reconstruction of the fire scene along with documentation of the fire scene regarding origin and cause will be discussed.

Myths and misconceptions about fire behavior regarding fire investigation will be reviewed.

This course reviews the impacts of a fire on the victim and the resources available for recovery. Also, the course will aid the fire inspector and fire investigator while on site with the victim.

Bio:

Joseph Schwartz began his career with the Palm Coast Fire Department eventually promoting to the position of Fire Marshal for Flagler County. During his time in the fire service field he became a certified law enforcement officer and reserved as a Deputy with the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office. In 1992 he was hired by the Florida State Fire Marshal’s Office and in 1998 promoted to the rank of Lieutenant supervising the South Region spanning Broward, Miami-Dade, and Monroe counties.
Joseph Schwartz retired from the State Fire Marshal’s Office in 2013 and became a private investigator opening his own business, Armor Investigations, LLC, specializing in the origin and cause of fires and life safety code consultation. Joseph Schwartz is a Certified Fire Service and Law Enforcement Instructor, a Certified Fire Investigator, a Certified Fire and Explosives Investigator, a State Certified Fire Investigator II, a State Certified Fire Inspector, and a Private Investigator.
